Waiting for word on Owen High School's nude cheerleader photo scandal

Here's the story, as told to me by a loyal reader. I'm awaiting more information about the naked photos that some cheerleaders at Owen High School apparently sent to their football-playing boyfriends while they were away at football camp.

The Citizen-Times has posted a story.

BLACK MOUNTAIN – Three female students at Owen High sent provocative cell phone photographs to some of their male classmates.

Rumors floating around the high school of the photographs reached administrators Tuesday. After administrators conducted an investigation, the students admitted to both taking and sending the photos. Their parents were then contacted.

Since the photos were both taken and sent while the students were off campus, the school has not taken any action against them.

“We’ve tried just to counsel the kids and their parents and go through the situation and let the parents handle it,” said Principal Don Johnson. “How many kids have done those kind of stupid things? You see that kind of stuff all over the news.”

Johnson was not sure when the photos were sent and said he wasn’t aware of the male students who received the photographs passing them along to other students.

While the school has had problems with students sending text messages using inappropriate or threatening language, this is the first time it has dealt with students sending inappropriate or sexual photographs to each other, Johnson said.

Students at Owen High must keep all electronic devices turned off and out of sight during school hours.

I'd say this is the safest thing .Girls are having sex in cars, boys look at their dads porn mags, kids are inquisitive when it comes to these things......

Don't talk like our kids are animals without control. Teenagers don't HAVE to do anything. This is an issue because they are to young to understand the consequences of such sexual choices. The problem is the PARENTS ARE NOT BEING PARENTS, for goodness sake!

Haha! I clicked wondering what news there was about that old story, and the answer is NONE. I'm sure naked cheerleaders get lots of hits. Every once in a while you should slip those words in. "Citizen Times lawsuit moves forward...(naked cheerleaders!)

Until these pictures are released to the public, it is impossible to determine whether this was an error in judgment which exemplifies the degradation of society, or if it's a turn-on. I'm inclined to think it was the latter.

I think a more pressing problem is what the h-e double tooth picks is the reason the school got involved in the first place. This was not on school property or during a school function. It is none of their business. Somewhere along the way the school administration started perceiving they have some kind of authority over the students after school hours.

These comments are as funny as the article. Sure it's a little off-color in topic alone, but a photo alone isn't unsafe or illegal. Absolutely the parents COULD do something, and the school doesn't need to be totally uninvolved, but it's the teenagers who are doing stupid things, so hold them responsible, and no one else, and no other influences. There are lots of influences out there, and it's your own decision which you listen to. These are some stupid kids having fun, and as long as they have the sense to keep it at that no one need get involved. The "Sex and Violence" scenario where sex gets thrown in with some other horrible dilemma it has nothing to do with has been around for decades, nay, centuries, and has stood its ground quite obliviously.

First -- Stop Automatically printing sex as bad: A teenager DOES have the ability to make decisions, and should be able to practice that ability and see the results.

Second -- The school has no business in this.

Third -- The parents should inform their kids, that's it, and if this behavior is still present, all the power to the kids. It isn't self-destructive, however degrading it may be.
